HS2 update

hs2 route fields

Your local Labour team will be joining protestors on Saturday (8th October) to show our support for the campaign against the proposed HS2 route along the M18.

Last month, Labour councillors voted to formally oppose the route which would run alongside the M18 in our ward (in the area pictured above). The proposal would see no mainline train station in South Yorkshire, instead diverting just 15% of the new train capacity into Sheffield city centre. HS2’s current plan would mean our community faces the impact and disruption of HS2, but with none of the potential economic or transport benefits. Councillors instead committed to work with other local councils and local MPs to develop the infrastructure that we need.

UKIP councillors ultimately voted against the motion after refusing Labour’s amendment to commit to work with others.

Both Council Leader Chris Read and MP John Healey have raised their concerns with the government’s Transport Secretary, who must now determine whether to accept HS2 Ltd’s proposal before continuing to further public consultation. Cllr Read and Doncaster’s elected Mayor Ros Jones have joined forces to seek a meeting with the Minister.

In the meantime, your local Labour team, including Cllrs Sue Ellis and Emma Hoddinott, will continue to work with the local Action Group.

Concerned residents will be walking from Bramley Parish Hall on Cross Street from 2pm on Saturday 8th October for a peaceful protest alongside other affected communities.
