Bins update: collection now due on Monday 5th

Residents will be aware that the recent bad weather has badly hampered bin collections across Rotherham.

In our area, most residents were due for a collection on Saturday 27th December – the first day of collections after Christmas. However, because of the weather, council staff tell us that they were only able to complete about 15% of collections on that day. Those collections then over-ran with crews spending an additional two days – Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th – in our area. We understand that about three quarters of bins have now been emptied.

The consequence of this has been that collections have been delayed right across Rotherham. Because of the backlog, we are told that the next collection for our area (properties who usually have a regular Friday collection) will now be on Monday 5th January.

We have raised the concern that this way of restoring schedules means that some residents in our area will have gone a particularly long time without a bin collection. We appreciate that this will cause understandable frustration to some residents, and in the circumstances we can only apologise for this. If your bin is full and you have additional waste, you should leave this out alongside your bin for collection on Monday.

Properties where bins were not emptied at all last week will be prioritised by collection teams on Monday. In view of the expected large collections, there has been provision made in the schedule to complete collections on Tuesday morning if there isn’t time on Monday.

Officers tell us that they hope, with the warmer weather now fast melting snow, that they will have the usual schedules restored by the end of next week. On this basis, we also expect that the usual collection of blue bins and bags will take place next Friday, January 9th and from then on we will back back on the usual fortnightly rota.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre on Lidget Lane will be open as usual from Saturday (click here for more details and opening hours).
