Supporting our local foodbank

food bank

Alongside our colleagues representing the Maltby and Hellaby wards, a donation from our Community Leadership Funds will help to make sure that free parcels of healthy food continue to be available to local residents who find themselves in difficulties.

Sadly, the number of people needing to access foodbanks continues to rise. Thousands of people have been hit by the Tory government’s welfare cuts, and the number of people out of work for more than a year continues to rise in Rotherham. As a result more and more people are vulnerable when unexpected bills arrive or benefits get delayed.

The foodbank operates from the Addison Road Day Centre in Maltby every Wednesday between 11am and 1pm, and is open to anyone who needs it. Boxes of food are available for £2.50, but the donation will mean that anyone unable to afford this will be able to receive a box for free.

The project provides healthy food that was surplus to requirements for supermarkets, so it also helps to make sure that less food goes to waste.

If you find yourself in a situation where you need urgent support, anyone can approach the foodbank at the times stated above, or you may be referred by the Job Centre. Additionally, people in urgent need who require further help can contact the council’s Fund for Change: http://www.rotherham.gov.uk/fundforchange or 01709 336000.
